Acupuncture for anxiety, stress and depression

Calm Sea

Acupuncture treatment can be very useful in the management of mental and emotional symptoms. Traditional Chinese Medicine views the mind and body as one, acknowledging you as a whole integrated being, recognising that the emotions have their manifestation in the body and vice versa.

This integrated approach means many patients who seek treatment for physical conditions often report feeling better emotionally and psychologically as well.

Diet and lifestyle changes can be a very important part of recovery too. I will work with you to develop and implement manageable changes over time, to support your system to allow emotional distress to transform.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a common experience for many people. Our overstimulating modern lifestyles often do not allow much ‘time out’, and the responsibilities of daily life can leave us feeling overwhelmed and anxious.

A feeling of not being able to cope can leave us feeling upregulated or panicky inside, whilst also feeling depleted or exhausted - anxiety is a pervasive and relentless experience which can make daily life really hard.

Acupuncture works to restore balance – calming and settling an upregulated system, whilst at the same time building the Qi (pronounced 'chee')  to restore energy. This allows for a feeling of calm and ease to build, and the capacity to cope without becoming anxious increases.

Stress

Stress can be described as the feeling that our resources do not match the demands upon us. This leads to feeling under constant pressure, often unable to switch off and relax.

For some people this can be a long-term experience. Research shows that stress is implicated in the onset of many diseases, and finding ways to manage our stress is very beneficial for all aspects of our life.

We may not be able to change the stressful situation that we are in, but acupuncture can help the energy of the body flow and transform optimally to allow relief from the build-up of tension – both physical and mental.

Depression

Low mood or depression affects many of my patients, and it can be a distressing and all encompassing experience. Acupuncture can be a very helpful treatment within recovery from depression. It is not a “magic bullet”, and works best alongside a programme of support including gentle and sustainable lifestyle and diet changes.

These aspects could be really different for different people, but my experience has shown that for those suffering the anguish of depression, change is required for recovery.

Acupuncture works on the spiritual, emotional and physical levels to support you on your journey towards recapturing your capacity for lightness and joy.

What patients say

I always feel so chilled after my acupuncture, like a weight is lifted off me.
